LETTER FROM OUR CEO: “Second Chances Save Lives”

Between 70 and 100 million adults nationwide have an arrest or conviction record. While many return to their community ready to recognize their full potential, restore their lives and discover new possibilities, several outdated, unjust laws create constant hurdles that make it impossible to succeed.

Despite some progress, 94% of employers, 90% of landlords and 72% of colleges and universities still utilize background checks, often limiting formerly incarcerated individuals’ ability to get a job, obtain an education, or make a living. In addition, 42,000 state and federal restrictions impose additional obstacles. This endless cycle keeps millions of people trapped in joblessness or poverty and prevents them from truly being given a second chance.

Second Chance Month serves as a reminder that everyone deserves an opportunity to thrive. This means equal access to education, employment and community support which allows them to walk toward their future.

Every woman or girl who walks into Operation Restoration is immediately granted a second chance—and for many, it’s also the first time they’ve felt dignity, discovered their potential or experienced the comfort of a warm, reassuring hug.

This month, I encourage you to consider making a donation to Operation Restoration to ensure even all women are given a second chance. A $20 gift can get a client a Lyft ride to their court date.. A $50 gift can provide a 31-day bus pass to a single mother who needs transportation to and from work. A $100 gift can prevent food insecurity by providing groceries to an entire family.

Investing in second chances means investing in stronger families and safer communities. By giving even the smallest amount, you are leaving a lasting impact and possibly saving someone’s life.

In Solidarity,
