Operation Restoration Commemorates Juneteenth With Service Day
The staff at Operation Restoration (OR) celebrates Juneteenth with a day of service to the community. This year, the staff and volunteers will register people to vote, serve hot meals and distribute clothing to the community from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. on Friday, June 14 at PotBelly NOLA, 2908 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Juneteenth marks the celebration of freedom, commemorating the day when the last slaves in the United States were set free on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, TX. Despite the abolition of slavery, more than three years prior, nearly 250,000 individuals remained in bondage.
Along with the voter registration drive and free food, drinks and clothing, the Justice and Accountability Center will be onsite to provide pro bono legal services, including notaries and information about expungements. A number of other area nonprofits are participating in a resource fair.
Community partners for the event include PotBelly, Black Voters Matter Fund, Natasha the Realtor, Engaging New Voices and Voters (ENVV), Grounds Krewe, Louisiana Abortion Fund, Louisiana Coalition on Criminalization & Health, The First 72 and Familias Unidas en Accion.
